Digital work permits

Under the regulations announced on 20 July 2018, the Board of Investment ("BOI") has implemented a new system intended to replace the previous system and all paper documents for visa and work permit applications. The new electronic system, which was launched on 1 August 2018, allows companies receiving BOI incentives to apply for employee work permits and long-term visas online.

Expatriates working for companies receiving BOI incentives can apply for visas and work permits through the Single Window system under Section 25 of the Investment Promotion Act, and can access services for digital work permits, visas, or renewals online

After consideration and approval by the BOI, immigration authorities, and the Department of Employment, the applicant will receive a confirmation email, and can book an appointment to complete the final steps of the process. Applicants must go to the One Stop Service Center ("OSSC") in Bangkok to obtain the digital work permit and have their visa stamped in their passport. Being able to book an appointment online will be more time efficient for candidates. In the past, candidates had to arrive at the OSSC early in the morning to queue up and wait. It was also necessary to prepare a set of work permit application documents for the final step of the process in the past. Under this new system, applicants do not need to submit any further documents for the digital work permit. Less paperwork will need to be prepared and submitted for visas and multiple re-entry permit applications as well.
